Meeting 22 February – Liberation of Kuwait

This evening we had a talk by our member Linda, whose family have lived in Kuwait for many years and which she regards as her adopted country. Linda and her husband witnessed the aftermath of the first Gulf War after the invasion and subsequent occupation of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990. Kuwait was eventually liberated on 25 February 1991 and this week sees the 20th anniversary of that event.

Linda showed us slides and prints of some of the photos she took of the aftermath of the occupation when she and her family were able to return to their home in May of that year.

In what must have been a traumatic time for Linda, she captured some historical images of burning oil fields, dead horses, abandoned tanks, unexploded bombs and all the detritus of war. Here are some of those images:
