Meeting 23 March – ‘How To’ with Brian Clarke

This meeting was the first time our club could make full use of its new digital projector which resulted in a very different evening than we have been used to in the past.

Our Vice Chairman, Brian Clarke, gave us a run-through of the basics of using Photoshop CS4 using his own laptop. He demonstrated setting up Photoshop’s colour settings, followed by a quick discussion on how this would affect a full colour managed workflow. This was followed by a short demonstration on making selections and the importance of feathering. Next was how to use the ‘Curves’ and ‘Levels’ tools.

After the break Brian showed the club members a method of converting colour images into monochrome. This method of working has, to the best of his knowledge, never been published in the photo press. All those present agreed it was a very different way of working.

To close the meeting Brian showed those present some of his most recent monochrome prints using this method of working.

Thanks to Brian for a very stimulating and informative evening: we clearly have an expert in the dark arts of Photoshop in our midst! Several members have requested a ‘part 2′ follow-up evening to take us on from where we left off and we will do our best to add such an event to the programme as soon as possible.

Brian’s Digital How To’s

Our resident digital expert, Brian C. has written a series of guides which show how to perform some of the common manipulations of digital images using Photoshop:

  • Adding Vibrancy Using Lab Colour
  • Advanced Dodging & Burning
  • Basic Colour Management
  • Contrast Masking
  • Converting Colour To Monochrome
  • Image Resolution and Resizing Prior To Printing
  • Notes Tool
  • Understanding Sharpening

These lessons are enclosed in this file brianclarke.zip which you can download here.

The files are in MS Word .doc format and contain text and screenshots to guide you though the lessons.

Many thanks to Brian for this very valuable material. No excuses now…

Sherborne In Bloom Photography Exhibition

The Camera Club again supported ‘Sherborne In Bloom’ this year by staging a week-long exhibition of photographs.

For months, members of the Club have been roaming Sherborne, taking pictures of eye-catching gardens, allotments, business premises and public spaces. The resulting 300 photographs were exhibited in the Cheap Street Church Hall during the week beginning on 14 July.

This coincided with the regional judging of Sherborne in the Southwest in Bloom competition on July 17, and our exhibition, as last year, was a crucial element of the judge’s tour.

In addition, our photographs also provided the entries to the local ‘Growing For Gold’ competition, in which local gardeners competed for trophies awarded by Sherborne In Bloom’s sponsors.

Members of the Camera Club were invited to attend the prize giving event at Sherborne Castle, where the cups and awards were presented by Mrs Wingfield-Digby.

Linda Shuaib won the prize for ‘Best Photograph’ for her picture of Brownies planting in Pageant Gardens.

Well done Linda – a well-deserved win!
