Meeting 13 September – AGM & Summer Images

We held our AGM last Tuesday where Gillian (Chairman) and Norman (Treasurer) reported on the previous twelve months’ activities in the Camera Club. The club has had a busy and successful year, with an increase in membership and a stabilisation of our finances following the major investments we made in digital equipment the year before.

The chairman reported that the committee, which also includes Brian C. (vice-Chairman) and Betty (Programme Secretary), had worked hard during the year to provide a varied programme of events and to administer the Club’s business. The programme for 2012 was made available to the members and the committee announced that we had extended the club year beyond April to include two more meetings to be held in May.

After the formalities of the AGM, members shared photographs that they had taken during the summer months. These consisted of a rich variety of subject matter, both prints and digital images, which we enjoyed viewing and discussing. Here are a few of the digital images we looked at:

Aligators in the Swamp

Betty went to Okefenokee Swamp Park, Georgia, USA recently and came back with some wonderful wildlife pictures. Describing the location, Betty commented: ‘It’s a National Wildlife Refuge and has been used in films. We did not see black bears, bobcats, deer, turtles, herons or egrets, only horseflies who made a meal of us!’

X-Ray Art Workshop

In January a number of us attended a workshop in the X-Ray department of Yeovil Hospital. This was hosted by member William, assisted by Sasha, a radiologist at the hospital.

We all took objects to x-ray and here are some of the results:

Meeting 14 December – Betty’s Mince Pies

Our last meeting of the year is usually an informal affair where we try not to do anything too serious. This year was no exception and we spent the first part of the meeting tackling the challenge of our inaugural Camera Club Christmas Quiz.

This was compiled by Linda who exhibited an expert knowledge of everything photographic – so expert, in fact, that most of us had no clue what the answers were. However, the winning team was headed by Norman and the members were duly presented with silly prizes by Linda.

During the break we enjoyed Betty’s delicious mince pies. This is another club tradition and we are very grateful to Betty for her generosity.

In the second half we looked at members’ photos taken during the recent freeze. There were some truly superb images to see, which only goes to show that, when it comes to frost and snow, you can’t keep a good photographer indoors!

Success At Portland

The Isle of Portland Heritage Trust has just held its annual Photography Exhibition. This is a large and well-attended event and photographers from a wide area usually participate.

Several members submitted entries this year and Trevor won a Silver Medal for one of his photographs in the ‘Transport’ category:

Many congratulations to Trevor for this award. The standard is always high and the competition fierce. Well done!

Wimborne Folk Festival

Norman on Location

The Camera Club is again participating in Sherborne In Bloom this year and our member, Norman Crabb, is contributing some photos of local food production.

To this end, Norman went on location to photograph a local beekeeper.

Beekeepers have to wear protective gear and so do the photographers who shoot them, so Norman was duly togged up in the necessary garb:

Stourhead Colours

Forde Abbey

Snapping in the rain isn’t a lot of fun but Linda, Betty and Gillian believed the weather forecast one day last week and set out for Forde Abbey in Somerset to do some photography.

The further west they went the more it poured. The house and gardens are lovely on a lovely day but in a downpour? There was a brief interval where it didn’t rain all that much and here are some of the pics they took:
