Thanks to our member, William, who is a consultant radiologist, we were recently invited to an X-Ray Workshop at South Petherton Hospital.

Each of us brought everyday objects to x-ray, including shells, cameras, electronic gizmos, tools and other bits and bobs. It’s amazing what’s inside some of the standard stuff we see and use without thinking about it!

We came away with some stunning images. Here is just a brief selection of the x-rays we took:

During the day the steam train 35028 Clan Line thundered through the station at speed. Camera Club member Betty Deavin snatched this quick photograph as the train approached the station:

A jolly day was had by all!

The best photos from everyone go into an exhibition at the Cheap Street Church Hall from 21 – 25 July. Here’s the gang setting up the exhibtion:

This has been a tremendous amount of work by everyone but it’s worth it to see the marvellous reception our photos are getting from everyone in the town.

The new village hall was opened on Saturday, 15 November and Gillian and Betty were there to record the opening ceremony.

Several hundred people, including all the local Great and Good, encircled the ribboned-off area armed with pairs of scissors.  At the command of the Bishop (that’s him with the megaphone) they all simulaneously cut the ribbon and univerally declared the hall open.

Champagne and cake then followed as people trooped in to inspect their new hall. Here are some of our happy snappies:

The Guide was published on 16 September and the contributing photographers were invited to join the great and good at a launch reception at Castle Gardens.

The event was held at Westlands conference facility at Yeovil and was attended by 48 representatives of camera clubs around the region.

Barry first showed us a sample AV slide show of pictures of Ireland which illustrated techniques of combining images with music and using a variety of transition effects to increase the dramatic impact of the pictures. He then took us through a demonstration of how to set up such a slideshow and he made it look so, so easy! This was a very inspiring session and brought home to us how much it is possible to creatively enhance still images.

The remainder of the day was a succession of demonstrations of techniques in PhotoShop. Barry showed us how to correct and enhance images using a variety of tools, some familiar to us and some advanced. Barry’s strength as a tutor is that he explains exactly what he is doing, he makes it look obvious and straightforward, and he has a very entertaining way of describing what is going on.

At the end of the day our heads were spinning with all the new information we had been shown but, like all great teachers, Barry inspired us to think about how we could use this knowledge to improve our own photograhy.

The meeting will be held at the Methodist Church Hall, corner of Palmer St and North St, South Petherton, starting at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome, entry £2.50. There’s limited parking adjacent to the hall, otherwise on-street parking further up Palmer Street.

Initially we had engaged Barry solely for the benefit of Yeovil Camera Club, however a number of our members wondered if other local clubs might not wish to join us for the day. All those members intending to attend in any event have taken this as a good idea.

Although we have given him the title of ‘Photoshop and the presentation of Digitally Projected Images’, his style is neither prescriptive nor rigid and in my discussions he has recommended that the day’s outline should follow his general approach. This we have accepted readily.

A short opening ‘Slide Show’ will show what is possible, followed by further illustrations of how to achieve the effects. The day will develop partly around his own special uses of Photoshop features in a way he has developed to provide a better result (different?) than the more conventional use of the tools.

Questions from the floor will be encouraged (but at least guided by me!) and the presentation will follow the lead of audience interests. To achieve this requires considerable skill on the speaker’s part but reports of those who have heard him on more than one occasion say that he does it very successfully.

The afternoon session may well be dictated by lunchtime discussion!

The day should provide something for every one.
